Database Troubleshooting Guide

  • A Hamden library card is required to use online resources from home. Enter your 14 digit library card number without any spaces. A PIN is not required.

  • Cookies and Javascript must be enabled in your web browser settings.

  • Security settings in your web browser should be set no higher than Medium.

  • Clear your Temporary Internet Files or cache.

  • Many of our online resources, including Reference USA, require that referring URL's be accepted by your computer's firewall. These resources use referring url technology to authenticate library users. If you have a firewall, such as Norton, or other security software on your machine, it may block this information from being sent to the online resource provider's website, and the online resource provider is unable to tell that you are a valid user.

  • To allow referring URL's for Norton Internet Security 2006 / Norton Personal Firewall 2005/2006:

Open the Norton Personal Firewall / Norton Internet Security
    1. Click Privacy Control
    2. Click Configure
    3. Click Custom Level
    4. The recommended level for viewing databases is Medium
    5. Make sure cookies are allowed
    6. Uncheck enable browser privacy
    7. Click OK twice and close Norton Personal Firewall / Norton Internet Security
  • Firefox may also block referring URL's. In the address bar of the Firefox browser, type in "about:config". Scroll through setting menu until you see "network.http.sendRefererHeader." Make sure the value is set to 1 or 2. (The default setting is 2, but some Firefox Add-ons will automatically change the value to 0).

Some users are concerned about the privacy implications of this information transfer. The risks are quite limited – the referring URL only includes a single URL of the page you were on just a moment before. It is only sent if you click a link from Site A to Site B, such as the link on the library website to the database site you wish to search.
