Wish List 2010-2011

Children’s Summer Reading Program - $4,800

Each year there is a summer reading program with a different theme.  The theme for this past summer was “One World, Many Stories” with a wide range of programs and activities ranging from science, creative arts, story times and live musical performances at Miller and the two branches.  There is a kick-off program and ending program thanking all the participants at each location.  Approximately 880 children attend @60 programs.  Other expenses include printing and craft supplies.  Over 450 children participate by tracking the books read in a folder with small prizes for reading.  Local businesses provide reading prizes.

Museum Passes - $1,700

The Hamden Public Library circulates 26 museum passes to Hamden families that allow either free or reduced admission to Connecticut attractions.  All that is needed for this first come, first served program is a valid Hamden library card.  This year 660 passes were borrowed by Hamden residents.

Renovation of Magazine / Reference Room Area - $10,400 (Friends funded $5,200 & Library Board funded $5,200)
This project involves making better use of the Reference Room space by making it a magazine area, leisurely reading & quiet study.  The reference collection will be moved closer to the Reference Desk.

Donald Hall Celebration - $400 ( Friends funded $200 & Library Board funded $200)
Former Poet Laureate Donald Hall, a former Hamden resident, is celebrating his 83rd birthday in September.  This cooperative program needs program printing and hospitality for over 300 guests.

Miller Book Discussion Series - $640 ( Friends funded $300)

This group, celebrating its 6th anniversary, meets monthly and has a following of 12 – 18 participants with librarian Pam Ross as the group leader and organizer.  A total of 170 people attended the book discussions this past year.  Participants are encouraged to recommend titles for future discussions.  Expenses include purchasing multiple paperback titles and one outside speaker program.

Whitneyville Animal Floor Cushion - $200 (Friends funded $200)

A large animal cushion encourages a child & parent to share a reading experience.

Support of Early Childhood Literacy at Branches                                                   $1,000

This project will enable the branches to purchase baby board books, concept / counting books, easy readers and basic story time materials to be read by parents / care-givers to young children.

 Miller Media Department Conversion of Classic VCR Tapes to DVD                             $2,000

As VCR tapes are withdrawn from the collection, certain classic titles need to be purchased in DVD format.  This project will allow the library to purchase @ 160 DVD titles.

 Miller Media Department Conversion of Classic Talking Books on Tape to CD            $3,000

Certain classics need to be purchased in CD format to replace high demand classics on tape.
This project will allow the library to purchase @100 unabridged titles.

AWE Early Literacy Station for Miller Children’s Room                                       $2,700

The Early Literacy Station is a standalone system with educational software in curricula area, targeted for toddlers through second graders.  We have one station in the Miller Children’s Department which is very popular.

Collection Development at Miller and the Branches                                                          $20,000

This project will allow Miller and the branches to purchase new print titles for adults, teens and children.  Our circulating collection is one of the best of all the neighboring public libraries and this enhancement will help maintain our quality collection.
